Only twenty minutes outside of Cape Town, one out of every four children in Khayelitsha suffers from chronic malnutrion. We believe everyone should have access to food and water. We searched high and low to find an organization that helps to feed those who aren’t quite as fortunate as we are. We decided to support Philani Child Health and Nutrition Project. Philani Child Health and Nutrition Project is located in Khayelitsha, and it was established in 1989, by Dr Ingrid Le Roux, this organization is committed to the protection of children’s rights, provision of proper nutrition and health care. This ensures each child has the chance to reach his/her full developmental potential.
The Philani Income Generating Project is a crucial arm of the organization that aims to combat poverty and dependency, which are often the root causes of malnutrition in children. Many of the mothers who bring malnourished children to the Philani Centers are destitute. Through the Income Generating Project, they offered education, empowerment, skills training and an opportunity to sell their products, so they can earn an income and become self-reliant.
