If you think cookies can’t make the world a better place, just ask the previously unemployed women of the Khayelitsha Cookie Company, who for the past 8 years have spent their days baking all manner of delicious cookies in the hopes of doing exactly that – and in the process providing a better life for their children.

The company started in 2004 in the Nbuntu training centre in Khayelitsha. From there the company relocated to Ndabeni in 2006 and since then expanded to occupy 3 units in a business park in Ndabeni.  Staff numbers increased from 2 ladies in 2004 to employing 45 staff currently.

Now in partnership with Pick n Pay and the Expresso Breakfast show on SABC3, the Khayelitsha Cookie Company is giving baking enthusiasts around the country the chance to produce their very own Khayelitsha creation with the launch of an exciting competition on 8 August 2013, which will aim to find SA’s best Rusk/Biscotti and Traditional Cookie recipes.

“The competition is a fun way of finding new recipes for the Khayelitsha Cookie Company,” says Adri Williams, Managing Director of the non-profit organisation. “Our current recipes are family secrets, passed down from generation to generation. We want to give South Africans an opportunity, not to only share their family recipes with the rest of the country, but also to make a lasting impact on the lives of previously unemployed women in Khayelitsha.

“With Pick n Pay as partner, it means we will be able to produce and sell the winning rusks and cookies to the public. The more we make the more we can sell, and this means we are ultimately able to employ more women.”

Suzanne Ackerman-Berman, Transformation Director at Pick n Pay, said: “It is very important for businesses to add value to society.  One of the ways in which Pick n Pay ads value, is to assist in developing small businesses. Through partnerships, we are able to give small businesses access to the retail market. This project will not only create employment for women, it will also give our customers the opportunity to share their favourite cookie recipe with the rest of South Africa”

Three finalists from each of the two categories will join Expresso Show presenters live in studio for a bake-off in mid-September, and in addition to some fun prizes, the winner will also be offered the chance of a lifetime – to have her (or his!) cookie sold in Pick n Pay stores around the country with their name proudly displayed on the label!

Williams explains their mission: “We created a company that could not only produce the best cookies in South Africa, but that would also radically change the lives of everyone involved. For our customers, we produce the biggest, best range of baked goods, including chocolate chunk cookies, ginger snaps, nutty fudge brownies and shortbread cookies.”

How the cookie crumbles: Send us your secret family recipe that’s been passed down through the ages – but don’t panic if you haven’t got one – any yummy cookie recipe will do the trick! If your granny or mother has a great recipe, but doesn’t have access to the internet, lend her a hand and enter on her behalf. Who knows, you may even be helping to make her famous!

The competition starts on Thursday, 8th August 2013 with entries closing on Friday, 23 August 2013.  Khayelitsha Cookie Company (“KCC”) reserves the right to extend the duration of the competition, subject to these terms and conditions.

The entries will be open for two weeks. At the end of the two weeks three finalists per category (Rusks and Traditional cookies) will be selected, who will be notified via telephone and email that they have been selected as one of the six finalists.

The judges’ decision on the six finalists is final.

The live bake-off is set to be held at the Expresso studio’s on the 12th September 2013.

Note that if you are not able to make the live bake-off on that date, you forfeit your position and another finalist will be selected.


All persons entering the Khayelitsha Cookie Company “Competition (“the promotional competition”) (“the entrants”) agree that the competition rules as set out in these terms and conditions are binding on them. A copy of these terms and conditions is available at


These terms and conditions and competition rules contain certain terms and conditions which appear in similar text style to this clause and which:

  • may limit the risk or liability of the promoter or a third party; and/or
  • may create risk or liability for the entrant; and/or
  • may compel the entrant to indemnify the promoter or a third party; and/or
  • serves as an acknowledgement, by the entrant, of a fact.

The entrant cannot be a juristic entity and must be an individual;

The entrant’s attention is drawn to these terms and conditions because they are important and should be carefully noted.

Nothing in these terms and conditions is intended to, or must be understood to, unlawfully restrict, limit or avoid any rights or obligations, as the case may be, created for either the entrant or the promoter in terms of the Consumer Protection Act, 68 of 2008 (“the CPA”).

The entrant acknowledges that by submitting his or her entry to the competition he/she has been given an appropriate opportunity to first read these terms and conditions before entering and the he/she understands and agrees to the terms and conditions.

All entrants to this promotional competition participate entirely at their own risk.  By reading and accepting these terms and conditions, the entrant gives consent to these risks and hereby indemnifies and holds harmless the promoter and Pick n Pay Retailers Proprietary Limited and all entities in the Pick n Pay group; their directors, employees and agents of any and all liability pertaining to any damage, cost, injuries and losses of whatever nature sustained as a result of their participation in the competition and related events and activities, save where such damage, cost, injuries and losses are sustained as a result of the gross negligence or wilful misconduct of any indemnified party.


The cook-off will be judged by a panel of judges.

Winners will be announced on the day of the cook-off as determined by the judges.
